Labor Day

The US Department of Labor explains that Labor Day "constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country". Another comment on the www.dol.gov web site points out that Labor Day does not honor a single individual or event, unique among our holiday observances.

United States labor is like a big Army of individuals, pulling together to make a living for families as well as create a nation of strength at a level the world has not seen before or since. Labor is the absolute backbone of the United States.

Like most of our holidays, we've failed to teach our children and grandchildren the significance of this holiday. Since our kids will be joining this great Army at some point in their lives, we need to explain to them how the power of our nation is tied directly to the spirit of labor, the willingness of the American worker to sacrifice, to work tirelessly, producing goods and services that are the envy of the world!

One of the greatest stories of American labor occured during World War II when the need to produce equipment for war was severe, the American worker rose to the occasion without intimidation or fear. They knew the need and they filled the need. That's the real potency of American labor. Explain the need to the American people and they will get the job done. Period. Our children and grandchildren must understand this because we must prepare them to be a part of it. This is their inheritance, their legacy.
